The number of new world-class ore deposit discoveries significantly declined over the past decade. As a consequence, there is a need for innovative mineral exploration strategies to guarantee a steady metal supply in the future. Researchers at Missouri S&T are focused on the development of innovative exploration tools to guide global exploration for a wide range of commodities, including rare earth elements, cobalt, nickel, copper, gold and platinum. As we expand exploration into the solar system, necessary minerals can be sourced from other planets and asteroids far away from our home on Earth.

Sustainably producing the natural resources of space, which will reduce launch costs. In time, mining in space will reduce human impact on Earth's environment and increase the chance that humanity will survive catastrophes, such as nuclear war or asteroid impact. Additionally, the coupled hydromechanical behavior of fractured rock. Rock cracks and changes shape when it is put under load, and this changes how rapidly groundwater, petroleum, etc. can move through it. The presence of water and other fluids also changes how easily rock can be excavated for foundations, tunnels, etc.
